Romanian (limba română or româna) is spoken by about 25 million people in Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, and Vojvodina (a region in northern Serbia). Over 17 million people speak Romanian in Romania itself. Unlike the Slavic languages of the surrounding Balkan countries, Romanian is a Romance language. There is a direct relationship between Romanian and Italian, Spanish, and French. People sometimes call Romania ‘a Latin island in a Slavic sea’. Even so, Romanian was written in the Cyrillic script, which is common for Slavic languages, until 1859.
The history of Romanian begins with the military Latin spoken by the Romanian legions in the province of Dacia. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Latin developed in isolation from the other Romance languages. Italian, French, and Spanish were more subject to other influences and slowly ‘drifted’ away from Latin. Romanian, on the other hand, still contains old elements from Latin that have disappeared from other Romance languages.
Even the Slavic invasions in the area of current Romania did not bring down this ‘Romanian Latin’. In fact, the prestige of the cultural language of Latin that was embodied by the Romanians ensured that even Slavic invaders adopted it. Conversely, Romanian was of course strongly influenced by Slavic languages, but it remained a Romance language.
Language and culture are inextricably linked, and the way in which people like to be addressed in different countries is just as different as their respective languages. Beyond that, you also need to take the language codes of the target groups into account. That is why we like working with in-country translators, in this case, Romanian translators who live in Romania and speak Romanian as a native language. Translators who are in the heat of the action, so to speak.
